ARCHIVE UPDATE NO 28

JOSEPH SOUTH(1)

Judith Cranefield has provided the original photograph of the photocopy that appeared in Update No 9. It was sent to her mother, Elizabeth, the youngest child of Joseph(1) and Mary Ann Dutton, by Samuel (2). The print had been made by Parker & Jenkins of Southwold and Samuel(2) wrote a description on the covering folder:

Grandfather South & Step - Grandmother date unknown         - Taken by Wrigglesmith & Brian [?] -Christchurch Dunedin NZ

It can be assumed that the details of the photographer were taken from the original photograph sent from New Zealand to the family of Joseph(1) in the UK, perhaps to Samuel(1).

The assumption, to date, has been that there was little, if any, communication between the two branches of the families of Joseph(1) after his emigration but the history of the photograph suggests that this conclusion should be reassessed.
