SOCIETIES and OTHER SITES

ROYSTON & DISTRICT FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY encourages research into the history of families originating from and living in Royston and the surrounding villages including Barley, Barkway and Reed. There are monthly meetings and a quarterly magazine is published.

BRUCE CASTLE MUSEUM is the repository of the local history archive for Tottenham and has been the source of much information appearing on this website. South flower pots are also on display in the museum. With incredibly helpful and friendly staff, a visit is highly recommended.

LOWER EDMONTON is a comprensive site dedicated to the past and present of the area within the N 9 postal district. Information and comment on places, street names, railways, parks etc. 

CLAY HILL FARM (later Devonshire Hill Farm) was a one-time family home of Samuel South(1). An earlier occupier was Lancelot Docwra details of whom can be found on the Docwra family website.

COLE'S POTTERY occupied the site next to the South Pottery and, Pat Cryer, a member of the Cole family, has published a website dedicated to her family and their pottery business. There are many topics of common interest to both the South and Cole research. 

EDMONTON HUNDRED HISTORICAL SOCIETY is concerned with the advancement of the study of local history and, in particular, the history of the Hundred of Edmonton, that is the ancient parishes of Edmonton, Enfield, Monken Hadley, South Mimms and Tottenham. FRIENDS OF BRUCE CASTLE support Bruce Castle Museum, Lordship Lane Tottenham, London N 17 which also houses the archive of the Local History Unit for the area. A variety of events are organised and a newsletter published. Enquiries to Bruce Castle Museum, Lordship Lane, London N17 8NU.

HARRIS DIGITAL PRODUCTIONS website is dedicated to South-east Hertfordshire including pages about Waltham Cross, Cheshunt, Goff's Oak, Ware and Hertford. Part of the proceeds from the sale of videos of the area that have been produced are donated to the Lowewood Museum, Hoddesdon.

TOM DOIG is a historian who, over many years, has made a study of the history of the villages, Barkway, Barley and Reed, south of Royston in North-east Hertfordshire. He is joint editor of " Hertfordshire's Past". Tom can be contacted at TomDoig@aol.com.

HORNSEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY is concerned with the history of the area covering Hornsey Village, Crouch End, Muswell Hill, Highgate, Stroud Green, Wood Green, Harringay, West Green, Tottenham, Bounds Green. Full details of membership, meetings and publications are available on their website.

LONDON & NORTH MIDDLESEX FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY covers the City of London, Marylebone, and the London Boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington. Their website  provides details of membership, meetings, publications and other services.

NEW RIVER ACTION GROUP is an umbrella group of some 50 member societies together with individual friends dedicated to protect, conserve and preserve the New River and its immediate environs. IRENE ROBINSON is a direct descendant of the Bysouth family and is the 5th great-granddaughter of Thomas Bysouth the younger brother of William, great-grandfather of Joseph South(1) 1822-1906. Irene has published a website of her family history.

TOTTENHAM HIGH ROAD is a site, continuing under construction, and dedicated to Tottenham High Road, N. 17, Tottenham High Road, principally that part of it between Tottenham High Cross and the Edmonton Boundary.

"TOTTENHAM & WOOD GREEN PAST & PRESENT" by Christine Protz and Deborah Hedgecock (Sutton Publishing - 2003) - a history of the two districts in photographs with references to Samuel South & Sons.

"HARINGEY AT WAR" by Deborah Hedgcock & Robert Waite (Tempus Publishing - 2004) - a pictorial history of the Borough during both World Wars includes reference to Samuel South & Sons                                             

"REED THROUGH THE AGES" a history of the village of Reed by Tom Doig has been published. Reed was the home of several early Souths. Copies are obtainable from HNEP Ltd. Wynnels, Little Cokenhach, Nuthampstead, Royston, Herts. SG8 8LS. Price £5 plus 50p postage. Cheques made payable to HNEP Ltd.
